The Texas Pharmacy Museum
The Texas Pharmacy Museum
Opened in 1998, the Texas Pharmacy Museum is one of only two museums in Texas that specialize in the collection, preservation, documentation, research and exhibition of items related to the history of pharmacy. Of the more than 140 pharmacy museums in the United States, the museum is among a few to be affiliated with a college or school of pharmacy, making it a unique educational resource.
Visitors to the museum, which is located in the basement of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (Ï㽶ֱ²¥) School of Pharmacy (SOP) building on the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campus in Amarillo, see a variety of items that include a recreated early 20th century pharmacy, tools of the trade, pharmacy products and delivery systems, pharmacy-related literature and graphic materials, drug store sideline objects, a research collection and a room recognizing and honoring Texas pharmacy practitioners.
More than 150 donors from communities across Texas as well as several other states have provided artifacts and other materials to the museum. To date, the museum's growing collection numbers more than 12,000 items.
All applicants for admission to the Amarillo campus of the SOP visit the museum during their interviews and all incoming Amarillo SOP students are introduced to the museum during their new student orientation. The museum also serves as a research center and laboratory for SOP students, faculty and staff.
