Biography:
Steven Brooks, MD, FACS, graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California and detoured from advanced education for five years to play professional football in the NFL for the L.A./St. Louis Rams, San Francisco 49鈥檈rs, New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins. In the off-season Dr. Brooks was also a professional actor, appearing in several episodes of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Beverly Hills 90210, HBO鈥檚 Arliss and the movie Space Jam.
Dr. Brooks inevitably followed his passion to become a doctor and matriculated to AUC School of Medicine in 2001. Dr. Brooks completed his general surgery residency at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where he was named the Raleigh-Ross Outstanding Resident by the Texas Surgical Society. While chief resident at Texas Tech, he was the recipient of the 2010 American College of Surgeons Resident Award for Exemplary Teaching. Although the American College of Surgeons (ACS) had met annually for the previous 96 years, Dr. Brooks was only the 8th recipient of the award.
He completed two additional years of fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he trained in Trauma Surgery, Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. He received the Vanderbilt University Adult Emergency Department Advocate Award for 鈥渞epresenting the highest ideals of patient advocacy and professionalism with patients and Emergency Department Physicians.鈥 After returning to Texas Tech University Dr. Brooks received the 鈥2016 South Plains Emergency Medical Service (SPEMS) Physician of the Year鈥 award from the Trauma Area B Regional Advisory Council (B-RAC). Additionally, one year after assuming the trauma medical directorship, University Medical Center received the state鈥檚 highest trauma recognition, the Texas Department of State Health Services Designated Trauma Center Award.
Dr. Brooks is an Associate Professor of Surgery and the Trauma Medical Director at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. He is also the Director of the Geriatric Trauma Unit and Surgical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Dr. Brooks is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the International College of Surgeons (FICS).
Inpatient practice is focused on Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Acute Care Surgery, and Burns at the Level 1 University Medical Center, including management of Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections (NSTIs). Outpatient practice includes serving as the principal general surgeon for the John Montford Unit, a Lubbock medical facility in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) state prison system.
Research interests include numerous aspects of trauma and critical care. Recent emphasis includes rib fracture management, thoracic trauma, and as Director of the Geriatric Trauma Unit, dedication to improved care of multiply injured elderly trauma patients. Additionally, Dr. Brooks has focused on outreach as a leader in trauma education for hospitals in the West Texas and Eastern New Mexico region. He is also devoted to system improvements within the residency program, promoting education and research regarding documentation, acuity, and billing. He also drives system improvements within the University Medical Center as a member of numerous committees devoted to evidence-based best practices in antibiotic stewardship, sepsis management, and aspects of critical care. He is the surgical representative for the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP).
