Biography:
Sharmila Dissanaike MD FACS FCCM is Peter C. Canizaro Chair and University Distinguished Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX. She is a clinically active trauma, burn and acute care surgeon who has won over 50 awards for clinical, academic and research excellence during her career. She has written over 150 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters, and given over 300 regional, national and international presentations and invited lectureships.
Dr. Dissanaike holds multiple national leadership roles, including as President-Elect of the American Burn Association, Vice-President of the Southwest Surgical Congress, and Governor of the American College of Surgeons. She serves on the Committee for Ethics, the Advisory Council of Rural Surgery, and Program Committee of the American College of Surgeons, highlighting her wide array of interests and longstanding dedication to advancing all aspects of surgical care. She is committed to surgical education & residency training, serving on the ACGME residency review committee for surgery and on the American Board of Surgery. She has worked locally and nationally to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in surgery through education and advocacy, and towards directed efforts to address longstanding healthcare disparities and inequity.
My outpatient clinical interests focus on skin and soft tissue reconstruction for defects arising from large wounds or cancers, resection of redundant tissue such as excessive fat after weight loss, skin cancers, and hernia repair. I also perform routine general surgery, and have an inpatient practice focused on trauma, burns and critical care.
Research interests include all aspects of trauma, burns and the management of critically ill patients. I have a focus on injury prevention and the relationship between substance abuse and injury. I also have an interest in nutrition and surgical healing. Director of the Burn Center of Research Excellence (BCoRE).
