Third-Year Clerkship
OB/GYN 3rd Year Clerkship
This clerkship is intended to introduce students to some knowledge, skills, and attitudes about women and their special conditions and problems. Students will learn about outpatient low risk and high risk OB patients; inpatient obstetric, gynecologic and oncologic patient workups and care; surgery and postoperative care in benign and oncologic gynecology, as well as obstetrics; and gynecologic outpatient care including well woman visits, problem visits, diagnostic workups, colposcopy, and other procedures. The rotation begins with a two-day Orientation which will include both lectures and simulated learning. Clinical rotations will begin in the first week after orientation. Students will rotate through seven different areas each week and are expected to attend meetings, lectures and Residents’ Conferences as they occur.
Hours:
Usually 0500 or 0600. Student will contact lower-level resident prior to rotation
to find out what time to round on patients who had vaginal deliveries. Monday-Thursday
checkout is 0700 and 1730. 24-hour call on Saturday of rotation.
Patients:
Student will follow at least 2-3 patients per day through labor, delivery and postpartum
Hours:
Report Sunday evening at 1900. Student will contact lower-level resident prior to
rotation.
Patients:
Student will follow at least 2-3 patients per night through labor, delivery and postpartum
Hours:
Monday – Thursday 0800-1200± and 1300-1700±
Friday 0830-1200±
Patients:
Student will begin seeing prenatal patients with residents to learn what is done and
what questions to ask. When comfortable with the patients, student may see them first
and present the patient to the resident or attending.

Patients:
Student will begin seeing patients with residents for annuals, follow-ups, triage,
problem patients, etc. When comfortable with the patients, student may ask residents
for permission to see patients on their own and present to resident or attending.

Patients:
Will vary based on procedures scheduled. Infertility is a sensitive issue for many
so REI physicians and staff appreciate your understanding in these cases.

Monday – Thursday 0800-1200± Friday 0830-1200±
Patients:
Student will begin seeing patients with residents. When comfortable with the patients,
student may begin to see the patients on their own, collect a history and present
to the resident or attending.
Hours:
0630 in Day Surgery OR. Student will contact lower-level resident prior to rotation
Patients:
Student will talk with patients in Outpatient or OR Holding for the day to obtain
a history, observe/scrub on all cases, and review post op orders and prescriptions
with the resident. Student will participate in daily rounds on all GYN inpatients,
observe patients in Colpo Clinic, and see ER and in –house consults with resident.

- Pre-Op Conference: Friday afternoon at 1300 (optional)
