Safe and Healthy Workplace
Ensures that all faculty and staff are educated and trained safety procedures, and that codes are enforced to guarantee facilities are safe, equipment is maintained, as well as responds to environmental issues. Safety Services at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center stays compliant with licenses and permits through training courses, laboratory evaluations and record-keeping functions.

Safety training plays an important role in ensuring that all faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and visitors meet the necessary training requirements. Employees are responsible for performing their work in a safe and responsible manner. Knowledge of appropriate safe work procedures and safety rules is essential.

Respond to environmental issues, provide assistance, supervision, and equipment to check, reduce, or remove any hazardous, biological, chemical, or environmental materials or conditions. Environmental issues may cover but are not limited to potentially hazardous materials include biological and infectious organisms, hazardous chemicals, and radioactive materials.

Interpretation and enforcement of codes applicable to fire or life safety. Inspection of all HSC facilities for fire prevention and building construction review. Responsible for the proper operation of all fire alarm, fire suppression and directly related equipment. Responsible for the continued viability of all facility life safety functions. Responsible for the investigation of all fires and fire alarms. Conducts fire drills.

To ensure that research laboratories are in compliance with institutional policies and federal safety regulations through regular inspections. To regularly test safety equipment to maintain proper operating levels. To document all inspections, tests, and operations of the division. To review research protocols as members of the IBC committee and to aid in Laboratory Safety Training.

Plans, executes, and supervises an occupational safety surveillance program for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Identifies, provides notification, and recommends corrective actions for elimination or minimizing of unsafe or atypical (discrepancies from accepted standards) conditions and operations presenting risk or probability of injury to persons, damage to equipment or facilities, and non-compliance with established federal and state standards and guidelines pertaining to occupational health and safety.

Radiation Safety Services at Ογ½ΆΦ±²₯ is tasked with protecting individuals from unnecessary exposure to sources of radiation, preventing the spread of contamination, and assisting in the fulfillment of the responsibilities of the institution to its students, staff, and the general public, and to the associated regulatory agencies.
