FMAT Program Co-Directors
Ron Cook, D.O., MS, MBA, ABFP, ABOFP; Professor of Family Medicine and Medical Education & FMAT Co-Director. Dr. Cook was appointed Braddock Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine in 2012 and previously served as Family Medicine vice chair and residency program director. He received B.S., M.S., and M.B.A. degrees from Texas Tech University. A graduate of the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center, Dr. Cook served as Chief Resident of the Ï㽶ֱ²¥-Lubbock Family Medicine residency program. In addition to serving as FMAT program Co-Director, he is co-leader for the Cardiovascular Week in FMAT1 and serves as a faculty mentor for FMAT2.
Betsy Goebel Jones, EdD; Professor of Medical Education and Family Medicine & FMAT Co-Director. Dr. Jones received the B.A. degree in Theatre Arts and the M.A. degree in English from Texas Tech University, where she also completed a doctoral degree in Higher Education. She joined the Department of Family and Community Medicine in 1992. Dr. Jones serves as the Regional Director for the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health. In 2013, Dr. Jones became Founding Chair of the Department of Medical Education at Ï㽶ֱ²¥ School of Medicine. Dr. Jones provides day-to-day oversight for the FMAT program.
Keeley Hobart, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine and FMAT Co-Director. Dr. Hobart is co-leader for the Neuropsychiatry Week in FMAT1 and Block Director for FMAT2 and FMAT3. Dr. Hobart was a member of the first class to enter and graduate from the FMAT program, completing the MD in 2013. She completed residency training at the Ï㽶ֱ²¥ Family Medicine program in Lubbock, then joined the faculty in the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Hobart provides clinical program oversight.
Family Medicine Faculty
R. Michael Ragain, MD, MSEd, Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Ragain has served as UMC Chief Medical Officer since 2011. He previously served as Residency Program Director and Braddock Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Ragain is co-leader for the Endocrine Week in FMAT1.
Jamie Haynes, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Haynes is Associate Director of the Ï㽶ֱ²¥ Family Medicine Residency Program in Lubbock. She is co-leader for the Uro/Gyn Week in FMAT1.
Jennifer Ward, MD, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Ward is co-leader for the Neuropsychiatry Week in FMAT1 and serves as a faculty mentor for FMAT2.
David Trotter, PhD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Trotter is Associate Block Director for the Integrated Neurosciences Block. He is co-leader for the Neuropsychiatry Week in FMAT1.
Fiona Prabhu, MD, Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Prabhu currently serves as the course director for Development of Clinical Skills 1 and 2 and is the medical director for the Ï㽶ֱ²¥ Student Run Free Clinic. She is co-leader for the Respiratory Week in FMAT1 as well as faculty mentor and course director for FMAT2.
Kelly Klein, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Klein is Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship program. She teaches in the GI/Endocrine Week in FMAT1 and has served as a faculty mentor for FMAT2.
Felix Morales, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Morales is Associate Dean for Admissions in the School of Medicine. He is co-leader for the GI/Endocrine Week in Lubbock and a faculty facilitator for FMAT2.
Jennifer Mitchell, MD, Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Mitchell is Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. She is co-leader for the Musculoskeletal Week in FMAT1.
David Edwards, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Edwards is Associate Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. He is co-leader for the Musculoskeletal Week in FMAT1.
Franklyn Babb, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Babb is Director of the Family Medicine Clerkship in Lubbock. He is Course Director for the FMAT2 course.
Charla Allen, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Allen is Interim Chair of the Department of Family & Community Medicine and Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program in Lubbock. She is a faculty facilitator for the FMAT2 course.

Nolan Farmer, DO, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Amarillo. Dr. Farmer is Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program in Amarillo. He is a member of the FMAT Steering Committee.
Ellen Hampsten, MD, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Amarillo. Dr. Hampsten is Family Medicine Clerkship Director at the Permian Basin campus.
Tim Benton, MD, Professor of Family Medicine, Odessa. Dr. Benton is Regional Dean of the Permian Basin Campus. Dr. Benton is a member of the FMAT Steering Committee.
Martin Ortega, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Odessa. Dr. Ortega is Regional of the Department of Family Medicine and Associate Dean for Student Affairs on the Odessa Campus. Dr. Ortega is a member of the FMAT Steering Committee.
Nimat Alam, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Odessa. Dr. Alam is Family Medicine Clerkship Director at the Odessa campus.
Ikemefuna Okwuwa, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Odessa. Dr. Ike is Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Ï㽶ֱ²¥ in Odessa. He is a member of the FMAT Steering Committee.
Fred Onger, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Lubbock. Dr. Onger is Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Ï㽶ֱ²¥ in Lubbock. He is a member of the FMAT Steering Committee.
Simon Williams, PhD, Professor of Medical Education and Associate Dean. Dr. Williams is the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Office of Academic Affairs for the School of Medicine at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Williams is a member of the FMAT Steering Committee.
Steven Berk, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine, 2006-2023. Dr. Berk was Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean for the School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center for 17 years before his death in May 2023. Dr. Berk held the positions of Regional Dean, Professor of Medicine, and Mirick-Myers Endowed Chair in Geriatric Medicine of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Amarillo from 1999-2006. He was the key champion, supporter, and cheerleader for the FMAT program.
